...ON OUR WAY HOME, THE LONG WAY
Pete and Emma are just two Aussie's who met in London, fell in love and are kicked off their twelve month trip across the world with a wedding in Prague. Luckily they both share a love for travel, so when they decided it was time to head home to Australia, it had to be the long way round.
From Burning Man festival, to Iceland, weekends in Cornwall and abandoned monuments in Bulgaria, they've seen quite a few things with their travelling pig. They created this website to keep in touch with their friends and family in London and Australia, as well as new people on the way.

THE ROUTE
It all started with the Trans-Siberian railway. Then we added in other must-see destinations - Turkey, Mongolia, Myanmar, - and of course, Everest in Nepal. Within minutes we had a rough journey, and for months we kept pinning more places on the wall-sized map in our bedroom. But the beauty of travel is in the unknown - places change and so do plans.
We finished our overland journey in May 2016, exactly 12 months from when we left London, and put together some interesting statistics from our trip. Rest assured, we have plenty more trips planned, and will continue updating this site.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Pete showcases his fine-art orientated nature and travel photography on www.peterfranc.com. You can also find him on National Geographic, Flickr, 500px, Medium and Tumblr and Twitter. Phew!
WHY 'ONE-WAY TICKET TO NEPAL?
Emma left her home in Australia with a one way ticket to Nepal to hike the spectacular Annapurna Circuit in 2010 and then travel India. With no set plans, she ended up in the UK where fate took its course and she met Pete whilst looking for somewhere to rest her well travelled pack.
In the spirit of slingin’ the backpack on your shoulder and bravely stepping into the unknown, we continued the name from her original blog for this website to remind ourselves to not get stuck in comfort – and just go for it!

A NOTE ON COPYRIGHT AND IMAGE RE-USE
We love travelling, and have worked hard to make it possible. We also love our photos and take a lot of time (and gear) making them look the way they are. If you want to reuse any of the photos (or our rambling words) for anything, shoot us a mail first so we can figure out the finer details. Else we’ll send a disgruntled Nepalese macaque to sort things out. They bite. And smell.

WHO WE'VE MET
We've met some pretty cool people along the way, many on similar long journeys like ourselves. We love nothing more than sitting and sharing stories over a beer or a meal, swapping travel tips and hearing all about our new friends incredible adventures.
Many travellers we meet along the way are blogging like us, and they all have loads of great advice, amazing pictures and tons of inspiration for travellers looking for something new.
Here are a few of their blogs:

SOME STEPS AWAY
Ollie and Max are a French couple who met while they were both travelling around Australia in 2011. After settling in Zuric for a while, they both got itchy feet and decided to set off on a world tour...and they've set themselves a pretty epic route: Mongolia - China - Laos - Cambodia - Vietnam - Singapore - New Zealand - Argentina - Chile - Bolivia - Peru - Ecuador - Costa Rica - Mexico! |
_ROUTINELY NOMADIC
Laynni and Dean hit the road back in 2008, and have pretty much been travelling ever since. We met this pair of super friendly Canadians in Mongolia, and just missed catching them in Nepal (although they did leave us a very well loved and incredibly useful guidebook on hiking in the Everest region). Hopefully we'll bump into them again further down the road! They've managed to create the life we all dream of; May to August back home enjoying the summer in Saskatchewan, and as soon as the temperatures drop their off on some more adventures...all documented in some superbly written tales on Routinely Nomadic. |
EMANUELE DEL BUFALO
Emanuele left his home in Italy for the life of travel 5 years ago. He is a talented travel photographer, and when we met him in Mongolia, he and Pete immediately hit if off geeking out over their camera gear. Emanuele is essentially doing our trip backwards, after living in New Zealand for a few years, he's working his way overland back towards Italy, through the South Pacific Islands, South East Asia, China, Mongolia, Iran and Armenia. Check out his impressive photography portfolio here. |
TRAVELLING MONKEYS
Travel Piggy made some friends on the shores of Lake Baikal, the Travelling Monkeys, Bimbino and Bambina. Since Bimbino was born in 2012, he's visited over 21 countries, and he's still exploring with the company of his sister Bambina. Check out all handy travel tips, especially interesting for those on a tight budget here. |
WHAT WE'VE READ
We spent a lot of time waiting. For buses. For embassies to return our passports. For portable kettles which don’t turn off when they’ve boiled so we still think they’re heating up...
So we read. Here’s our list for this trip (in alphabetical order):
